Empty Nests
Empty Nests is a photo essay taken from my book of the same title. It consists of portraits of my age-peers taken in their homes. Most of the people photographed are baby boomers, currently in our sixties or seventies and recently, eighties. Children are grown and have, mostly, left the nest. Often grandchildren have arrived. Most of those photographed are either retired or soon-to-be retired. From that perspective, life’s battles—to earn a livelihood, forge a career, fulfill an ambition—have mostly been fought. Choices have irrevocably been made. Inevitably, all look back at their life’s work and choices with a mixture of satisfaction and regret. Nevertheless, the battle to stay relevant and engaged, and the search for purpose, is more urgent than ever.
